Caterpiller Catch Up

McKinley turning darkerMcKinley is turning darker.  He is about to get out of his chrysalis.  I think either tomorrow or the 11th he will hatch.

Redoubt eating a lotRedoubt has moved in with McKinley.  He is eating and eating and eating and eating…

We have a new one that Audrey named America.  We found him yesterday and he is half a centimeter.

(We just learned there are two baby fish!  They like to hide under the the that looks like a tree. )

Exciting News

We have a baby fish in our fish tank!  He is not even half the size of the feeder guppy.  It was a neat surprise!

It is surprising that there is only one, not more.  He likes to hid in the plants.  Hopefully he will survive!

McKinley’s New Job

McKinley has  pupatated !!!  !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hanging in a “J” shapeYesterday, he started spinning a “web”.  Adrian says “a spider web”.  The web lets him hang up high.  Then he hung upside down and turned into a “J” shape. “Dancing” Momma noticed McKinley was in a “J” at 10:00 last night.

This morning, he looked like he was “nodding off to Half finishedsleep”.  Then it looked like he was biting one of his legs and puulllinggg. Soon he stopped doing that and was just puullinggg.

Then it looked like his head slit open and his brain was green.  Then it looked like he was getting out of a stripped sleeping bag.  It looked like he was pushing the sleeping bag off toward his feet. Then he was all green.

So in about 11 days –around the 10th–(Miss Ginger’s Birthday)– he should hatch into a butterfly! McKinley’s Chrysalis We will know when he will hatch because his chrysalis will turn clear and then he starts shaking!

Can you guess why we named him McKinley?

Nature Explorer Camp! Year 3

Bog TrompCattail pollen is good to eat!

Today was the last day of Nature Explorer Camp.

On day 1 we took a walk, saw some real stuffed animals and made some bug nets.

On  day 2 we made shirts, we had a bog tromp, ate cattail and got soaked in the river!

On day 3 we  played “bugs, insects and spiders”,  played hide and seek, petted Vincent (the turkey)  and Adrian wanted me to kidnap him!

Oma and Opa Update

Opa sent us some pictures and here they are!Oma and Aunt Debbie by glacier

Oma with Aunt Debbie by a glacier.  Is this Exit Glacier? Dall sheep.jpg

Opa said this Dall Sheep was between Bird and Beluga Points.  Uncle Dan saw one closer, but did not have a camera 🙁

An avalanche caused this messHe said “at Placer River crews were cleaning up several freight cars that had been swept off the rail by an avalanche this past winter.”

Monarch Update

Monarch caterpillar one week oldThis is a picture of McKinley.  He is one week old.

:(  We think the other Monarch eggs died before they hatched .  🙁 They are supposed to hatch between 4 and 7 days, and it has been 8 days.  Their leaves got all moldy between last night and today.  We put their leaves under our milkweed so that if they do hatch, they will climb and get food.

We will try again.

Pictures from Opa

Here they are!

Welcome to Alaska!  Welcome to Alaska!  Says the moose!

Otters on floeA floe is a chunk of ice that is less than five miles across found in the sea.

Glacier

Oma and Opa in front of a glacier.  Opa is this Surprise Glacier?   If it is, did you hear any noise?  Did you see any whales?

I want to go to Alaska with my camera and get some pictures of Bald Eagles–hopefully!

P.S.  We have two Monarch eggs with dots on them.  I call the Cyeggs–Cyclops eggs– because they look like they have one eye before the caterpillars come out of their eggs.

Alaska

Oma and Opa are in Alaska.   They are visiting Opa’s sister, Aunt Debbie, and Uncle Dan.  They want to see some moose.  I want them to see a bear!  Hopefully they have a camera and use it 🙂 .  If they send me pictures, I will post them here.  Please send me pictures Oma!

They said that it is still bright around 3:00 a.m.  Now you know why it is called the Land of the Midnight Sun.

Jo-you-know that Juneau is the capital?

Thanks Wikipedia!I like this picture because it shows the real size of Alaska.  It is BIG!

The Iditarod dog sled race goes from Anchorage to Nome.  It is to honor people who race sled dogs because in 1925 children needed medicine because they had diphtheria.  Dog sleds were the only thing that could get where they were and get the medicine there.

I am going to learn more about Alaska this week.  I’llaska Momma and Daddy if we can go to Alaska someday soon 😉

Dream Float PlaneHere is a picture of my dream Float Plane.  The two middle bottom window are where it lands so you can take pictures of underwater and watch it.  The two on the side are for stability and passenger seat windows.    The top window is for the pilot and co-pilot, the extra wings are for stability and if you run out of gas, it glides nicely.  The one on the top has motors so the motors don’t get wet, the big “wheel” at the back is the main engine that you can get wet.
