Comparing Recipe Results

Friday I said that we were going to do a pumpkin seed taste test!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Batch one

Batch one is prettiest but hardest to chew.

Batch twoBatch two is crunchy, best tasting and sugary.  The Worcestershire Sauce changed the taste a little from batch one. Boiling made it not so “stringy?”.

Batch three

Batch three is crunchy and everyone’s favorite choice.

Momma would not let me eat 6 cups!

Comparing Recipes

We are going to do a pumpkin seed taste test!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are the questions:

  1. Does the Worcestershire sauce make them better?
  2. Does boiling them make them better?
  3. Will mama let me eat 6 cups six cups of pumpkin seeds?

Here is one recipe with a few variations we make a lot.

Boiling the seeds

  • 3 Cups pumpkin seeds (or other squash seeds) cleaned and rinsed
  • 3 Tablespoons melted butter
  • 3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Seasoned salt (1 teaspoon or to taste)

Boil some water.

Add pumpkin seeds and boil 5 to 10 minutes.

Drain well.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until dry.

This recipe tastes wonderful with Garum Masala, garlic powder, a little ground ginger and a little salt. Do this to taste!

It is also good if you omit the Worcestershire sauce and season with cinnamon and sugar.

This recipe is from Miss Krista;Roasted Seeds

  • 3 Tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups washed, cleaned pumpkin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon seasoning salt

Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit

Melt butter in large saucepan

Add seeds and spices; toss to coat

Spread seeds on a large cookie sheet with sides

Bake 40 minutes, stirring often, until seeds are browned and crisp.

Exciting School Day

Today we saw a calf being born!!!!!!!!!

We went to the fair to see if we could fix Daddy’s hat. Audrey wanted to see the calving center.  So we went. One of the cows was having contractions when we got there. We stayed for a little bit and Daddy went to get some food while we were watching.

Waiting….The calf stuck its hooves out a couple of times. Then two of its hooves came out, then its tongue came out, then its head came out. Then it came out the rest of the way a lot quicker! They had to put a chain on it to help pull it out because it was BIG!

PullingWhen it was born the vet that was there, did a quick check up, gave the mom a shot and checked to see if there was a twin 😕 Then they told us that the calf was a she. Momma cow started licking and licking. We were told it helped with her milk and it removed any trace or smell of a baby being born in the area. Before cows were domesticated, wolves and other meat eaters would smell the baby and come looking for some food.

The new baby and MommaWe saw the baby try to stand a few times. But we had to leave.

We also got to milk a cow, except for Adrian who touched the cow.

We had a really fun day!

McKinley’s New Job

McKinley has  pupatated !!!  !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hanging in a “J” shapeYesterday, he started spinning a “web”.  Adrian says “a spider web”.  The web lets him hang up high.  Then he hung upside down and turned into a “J” shape. “Dancing” Momma noticed McKinley was in a “J” at 10:00 last night.

This morning, he looked like he was “nodding off to Half finishedsleep”.  Then it looked like he was biting one of his legs and puulllinggg. Soon he stopped doing that and was just puullinggg.

Then it looked like his head slit open and his brain was green.  Then it looked like he was getting out of a stripped sleeping bag.  It looked like he was pushing the sleeping bag off toward his feet. Then he was all green.

So in about 11 days –around the 10th–(Miss Ginger’s Birthday)– he should hatch into a butterfly! McKinley’s Chrysalis We will know when he will hatch because his chrysalis will turn clear and then he starts shaking!

Can you guess why we named him McKinley?

On  day 2 we made shirts, we had a bog tromp, ate cattail and got soaked in the river!

On day 3 we  played “bugs, insects and spiders”,  played hide and seek, petted Vincent (the turkey)  and Adrian wanted me to kidnap him!

Monarch Update

Monarch caterpillar one week oldThis is a picture of McKinley.  He is one week old.

:(  We think the other Monarch eggs died before they hatched .  🙁 They are supposed to hatch between 4 and 7 days, and it has been 8 days.  Their leaves got all moldy between last night and today.  We put their leaves under our milkweed so that if they do hatch, they will climb and get food.

We will try again.
